Chiefs to provide huge economic boost to PNG

Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape views the entry of the PNG Chiefs into the NRL (slated for 2028) as much more than a sporting milestone. He positions the team as a long-term business, nation-building, and unification strategy for the country.

Key Points:

  • Massive Economic Boost: By 2028, Port Moresby anticipates an influx of 3,000 to 5,000 visitors every second week for home games. This consistent tourism is expected to inject millions of Kina into the local economy, heavily benefiting airlines, hotels, restaurants, security firms, and roadside vendors.

  • Infrastructure Development: The team's entry will accelerate improvements in local infrastructure, including stadium facilities, roads, and accommodation. These upgrades will not only support rugby league but also allow PNG to host other major international conferences and concerts.

  • National Unification: With rugby league being the most popular sport in PNG, Marape describes the franchise as a "national unification strategy deployed under the flag of rugby league" to bring the country together under one identity.

  • Diplomatic and Strategic Ties: The creation of the team highlights strong diplomatic ties, with Marape acknowledging the Australian Government's crucial support in turning the vision into reality.

  • Progress Underway: The Chiefs' headquarters has already been established at the Santos National Football Stadium, signaling to investors and business partners that preparations are moving rapidly from concept to action.
