A Resue in Remote PNG

  • Remote Lifeline: In the mountainous highlands of Papua New Guinea, where medical care is virtually non-existent, a specialized helicopter medevac service provides a critical lifeline [00:00].

  • Emergency Rescue: The video follows the rescue of a weak and ill patient named Lucy [00:18]. Too sick to walk, her helpers carry her on a handmade bush stretcher [00:15] to reach the helicopter crew, led by head nurse Audrey Taula [00:24].

  • Hospital Hurdles: Lucy is rushed to Angau Memorial Provincial Hospital in the nearest city, Lae [00:29]. However, three days later, the Dateline film team returns to find patients—including Lucy—sleeping outside on the ground due to overcrowding and wait times [00:39].

  • Media Shutdown: While interviewing Lucy about her condition and treatment, the reporting team is abruptly shut down and removed by hospital security, despite having prior permission from the CEO [01:27]. The reporter notes that while officials cited an administrative issue, it seemed more like an effort to hide the poor optics of their struggling emergency department [01:47].

  • Aftermath: The film crew is allowed back the following day [01:59]. Lucy is still waiting outside but had been given medicine and a place to sleep inside the hospital overnight, though doctors had still not explained her official diagnosis [02:04].
